As a key access route into Swansea Market, the Quadrant Bus Station and the arcades, it also provides a direct route to Castle Square, popular with residents and visitors at lunchtime and a venue for outdoor events during Summer.

Swansea Market

Shop under cover in Swansea Market and you are following an almost millennium old tradition. Although the contemporary building was officially opened in1961, markets have had a presence in the city for hundreds of years with the first development of a covered market occurring in 1652. Over the years, the Market, which at its peak in the 1920’s boasted 670 stalls, has been reconstructed after the Second World War into what you find today.

And that means a bustling, vibrant, city centre marketplace, hugely popular with visitors and residents alike. The diversity of its products means that almost anything can be found under its great glass roof. Of particular note is the abundance of local Gower produce including fresh fish, vegetables, fruit and meat.

Cheese lovers won't be disappointed with the variety of cheeses including many Welsh specialities. Handy snacks such as spinach fritters, fresh olives and continental sausages are also available. Health conscious shoppers can also pick up bags of dried fruit, nuts and organic produce. Welsh cakes, cooked on the griddle, are a must for a sweet treat enjoyed as you walk or with tea, at one of the friendly cafes in the Market.

Away from food and drink, the Market also sells practical items such as mobile phones, computers and electrical goods as well as luxuries such as perfumes, lingerie, jewellery and hair accessories. Visitors to the city are encouraged to browse around some of the Welsh souvenir and craft stalls; if making a purchase, wrapping paper and cards can be bought in the Market as well.
